Authorities have confessed that approximately 9,400 customers of Hydro-Quebec are still being kept deprived of electricity since 10 a.m. in the morning, i.e. when rapid and powerful rainstorm took a full swing across southern Quebec last night. During the peak hours of the outage, it affected an estimate of almost 60,000 homes and businesses. Hydro-Quebec has refrained from indicating towards any deadline until when full service will be restored. Majority of those still affected by power outages reside in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Laurentian regions.
Severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by Environment Canada since early Wednesday evening. Later Environment Canada detected wind blowing up to 81 km/h at Montreal’s Trudeau airport at around 5 p.m., whereas pea-sized hail was witnessed in Laval. Incidents of minor damages were reported in the Montreal-area, including a small fire at a building on Laurier Street and a sewer backup in Longueuil. Meanwhile, a high heat and humidity warning is still effective in Montreal and Laval.
On the other hand, Environment Canada calculated Humidex values to keep on increasing today up to 35C, and predicted even more increment up to 40C on Friday. However, the heat is predicted to cool off later in the day on Friday as another cold front pushes its way into central and western Quebec, bringing more severe thunderstorms. Whereas temperature and weather forecast over the weekend is expected to remain a little closer to the seasonal average.
