Chris Hedgesa graduate of Harvard Divinity School and a foreign correspondent for nearly two decades in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Balkanswrites and speaks extensively on war, religion, American culture, empire, and the conflict in the Middle East. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Hedges was a foreign correspondent for The New York Times from 1990 to 2005 and previously worked for The Dallas Morning News, NPR, and The Christian Science Monitor. He served as the Balkan Bureau chief for The New York Times and the Middle East Bureau chief for the paper. He is an Arabic speaker and has spent seven years in the Middle East and perhaps more time in the Palestinian territories than nearly any other American reporter. While based in Paris, he was a member of the New York Times team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for the papers coverage of global terrorism and he received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. Hedges is also known as the best-selling author of several books including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002)a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for NonfictionEmpire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2009), Death of the Liberal Class (2010) and New York Times best seller, written with the cartoonist Joe Sacco, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012). His latest book is The World As it Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress (2013). Hedges also contributes a weekly column to the online publication Truthdig. He holds a BA in English literature from Colgate University and a master of divinity from Harvard Divinity School. He was a Nieman fellow at Harvard University during the academic year 1998-1999 where he studied in the Department of Classics. Hedges has an honorary doctorate from Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, California. He has taught at Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University, and the University of Toronto.
