With Inner Spaces, celebrated visual artist Irie Epstein explores the idea of different spaces as richly symbolic forms, representing the complexity of the inner world. In the paintings, each space and the images within co-exist in a bigger structure, yet retain an autonomy and independence. The dialog between the different forms reaches a harmonious unity in the playful, seemingly whimsical, brightly coloured and often distorted combinations of recognizable and abstract subjects. By integrating images and abstract forms and creating tension between discipline and improvisation, I am looking to convey an impression of my inner self and arouse the curiosity and imagination of the viewer, says Epstein of her work. Irit Epstein holds a master’s degree in fine arts from HDK in Berlin, Germany, as well as a master’s degree in art therapy from New York University. Her work has been exhibited in Israel, Germany, Italy and Mexico. Since her arrival in Canada three years ago, her paintings have been regularly shown in solo and group exhibitions in Toronto. Inner Spaces is on now through August 15, 2013 at Articsok Gallery, just north of the Junction at 1697 St. Clair Avenue West. About Articsok: Articsk Gallery is a commercial gallery with a 740 sq ft exhibition space featuring painting, sculpture and photography by contemporary Canadian and International artists.
