Secret Rose Theatre (North Hollywood, CA)
We often hear how straight-laced the Victorian Era was. And then something like this comes along. A 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony nominee for Best Play, Sarah Ruhl’s provocative and touching comedy is set in the 1880s. Back then, doctors believed that women who were troublemakers or suffered from nervous disorders were afflicted with “hysteria.” Fortunately, they also thought this “problem” could be treated with a brand-new invention. The vibrator! In the Next Room centers on a doctor and his wife who are dealing with issues of intimacy and jealousy. When the doctor’s wife hears strange sounds emanating from the treatment room and sees patients glowing on their way out, she is determined to investigate. Ranging from the tender to the farcical, this clever comedy ponders marriage and intimacy, and how electricity came along to give them a revitalizing spark.
