Edmonton police has officially confirmed that a high-risk sex offender wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, Michael Stanley, has been positively located in the United States. According to police sources, Stanley’s existence has been confirmed by the U.S. Customs officials, along with evidence that he crossed into Washington State through a B.C. border crossing on October 7, 2013. EPS investigators elaborated that they are aware of his exactly location, though he is not in custody at this time.

EPS Behavioral Assessment Unit, Chris Hayduk, mentioned in a statement that “law enforcement agencies are aware of Stanley’s whereabouts. The Edmonton Police Service has notified the appropriate agencies in the United States and will be consulting with Crown prosecutors for the possibility of extradition of Stanley back to Canada.” Police has refrained from commenting on how Stanley was able to cross the border. Hayduk alleged that “the Edmonton Police Service is continuing to investigate Mr. Stanley’s flight from law enforcement and how he gained entry into the United States.” He added that “his warrants right now are Canada-wide warrants and to my understanding, you know, he’s in the States.”

Hayduk admitted that the authorities here would have preferred to have caught Stanley before he crossed the border. Now, Hayduk speculated that “for him to be in the States is a concern that those agencies are going to have to follow up.”  Police were initially alerted to the situation at the time when Stanley skipped from Edmonton to Lloydminster on October 1, after cutting off an electronic monitoring bracelet and leaving it behind.
