A recently conducted survey has revealed that nearly one in three Canadians closely follow professional football, which is though considerably less followed than the sport hockey but still way ahead of pro baseball, soccer and basketball in terms of dedicated fans. The poll with sample of 1,505 was conducted a short while before Nov. 24 Grey Cup final, which became the most-watched CFL championship game ever recorded on English-language TV after attracting  5.4 million viewers last year.

The research was conducted in collocation of sociologist from Reginald Bibby and pollster Angus Reid Global. It pointed out that the Canadian league, despite its comparatively small media exposure and corporate support, was slightly ahead of its American counterpart in avid interest, i.e. 26 per cent versus 21 per cent. A University of Lethbridge professor experienced of monitoring social trends for four decades, Bibby, stated that it is as “something of a cultural miracle,” explaining that “ironically, the intense marketing of American football may be helping to ‘sell’ football, Canadian-style.”

Upon comparing with previous research, Bibby related that the new poll show that both the CFL and NFL have increased their fan bases by about 10 percentage points over the past decade. Leaving almost 33 per cent of Canadians following pro football, compared to pro hockey’s 46 per cent, baseball’s 20 per cent, soccer’s nine per cent, and basketball’s eight per cent. The survey took place on the internet in early November and is considered accurate within 2.5 percentage points.
