On Sunday, the newly born Greater Upper Nile Students’ Association (GUNSA) graduated their first batch of 152 students in various faculties in the UNU main Campus at Malakal.

Bior Garang Mabior, the graduates’ representative urged graduates to be the symbols of unity across the country and especially among the communities living in the three states of Upper Nile, Jonglei and Unity states.

Mabior who was among those who spearheaded the formation of the association said the creation of the body was not political but a restoration of unity among sons and daughters of the region.

“This graduation will make the beginning of unity among peoples in Greater Upper Nile Region and the entire communities of South Sudan. And we are urging the members of the body to keep this light of unity burning forever,” Mabior told the crowd.

“Let us ensure that unity does not diminish. Let unity remain among members, our communities and the people of South Sudan and beyond,” he added.

He urged the graduates to be active in their communities and liberate South Sudan from corruption and ignorance which is widespread in the nation.

“We are graduating today and please look ahead. We need to liberate our people from the sea of ignorance and corruption. This demands great minds, strong hearts and ready hands. It also needs occupational competent and effective group participation,” Mabior said.

Mabior told the graduates to develop sense of responsibility and self respect to honour the obligations upon them.

Greater Upper Nile Students’ Association became the last and the newly born regional association in UNU only in 2013 although the university is two decades old.

During the past years Students in the three states of the then Upper Nile Province could not come together to form an association because of their tribal differences.

Due to these differences students were united after their tribal associations in the University of BNFA for Nuer, Jieng for Dinka, Foshada for Shilluk and others.

However, Vice Chancellor Bol Deng Chol banned the activities of all the tribal associations in the campus leaving only Regional associations alive.

The Chairperson of the Association Sabino Solomon while launching the association in UNU told the crowd to keep the unity of the communities progressing.

“The candle of this association should be burning and we will curse he who will put it off. We have formed this GUNSA for the first time in the region. We want it to remain active because we want to give peace a chance in this region,” Sabino said.
