All four of the winning candidates who have secured their seats in recent federal byelections held on Monday made their debut appearance on Parliament Hill, convening along with fellow MPs at their weekly caucus meetings. Among the newly elected were Manitoba MPs Larry Maguire (Brandon-Souris) and Ted Falk (Provencher), who joined the Conservative caucus meeting on Wednesday morning, and Chrystia Freeland (Toronto Centre) and Emannuel Dubourg (Bourassa) who met their Liberal colleagues.
Liberal Leader, Justin Trudeau, welcomed all four of his byelection party candidates for the Parliamentary Press Gallery held earlier on Wednesday, which resulted in participation of both losing candidates as well, namely Terry Hayward from Provencher, and Rolf Dinsdale, who lost by a few hundred votes in Brandon-Souris. The party joyously celebrated their performance on Monday night as it made significant improvements in their vote share in Manitoba and retained both two strongholds despite increased challenges from NDP candidates.
Concluding his caucus meeting on Wednesday morning, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair confessed that they encountered “a challenge in Manitoba,” where it witnessed decrease in vote share compared to the 2011 election. However, he pointed out that the party is still encouraged by candidate Linda McQuaig’s increased popularity in Toronto Centre, where the party amplified its vote share by 20 per cent compared to 2011. Muclar stated that “Toronto is going to have more than 60 seats in the next election. It’s a key battleground.” Speaking about Toronto riding of Fort York, Mulcair alleged that “Linda McQuaig, you haven’t heard the last from her. She’ll be in the House of Commons after the next election with that kind of support.”
