The four new MPs elected in Monday’s federal byelections attended their respective party caucus meetings for the first time on Wednesday on Parliament Hill. Consequently, the two liberal MPs, namely Chrystia Freeland from Toronto-Centre and Emmanuel Dubourg from Bourassa Liberal, were also present at the time to meet Leader Justin Trudeau at the weekly party caucus meeting. Among other things, it was noted that Freeland has been an advisor to Trudeau on economic policy since he appointed her to an economic consultative committee in September.
Upon inquiry about when does the Liberal Party plans to lay out its economic platform for Canadians, Freeland refrained to answer the question directly and instead alleged that only the caucus and Liberal membership were working on it. However, Freeland did add that “I’m very excited about some of the new discussion we’ve been having.” In addition to that, Freeland boasted that in light of the Monday’s byelection results, the Liberal Party is now undoubtedly “a force across the country.”
On the other hand, Trudeau revealed that “the timeline is sooner rather than later.” He straightforwardly revealed that his party will be deliberating on economic issues at its policy convention in February in Montreal. He alleged that “our council of economic advisers… will be active in putting forward a strong vision for what the future can be.” Trudeau stated that “we are relevant and resonating right across the country but Canadians are eager to hear more, they want to see what a Liberal government is going to look like.”
