The freshly elected BC NDP leader, John Horgan, mentioned in his inauguration speech on Sunday that Vancouver Families and communities will be the focus under his leadership. In his speech, Horgan criticized the BC Liberals’ financial record and policies concerning families in the province, including electricity rate hikes and child support clawbacks for single mothers.

Mr. Horgan mentioned that “when I hear Christy Clark and the BC Liberals talk about ‘families first’ when they take child support payments back from single mothers — I can relate to that” because he was raised by a single mother following his father’s death. According to Horgan, the party needs to focus on exploring what has led working British Columbians to not vote for the party, and threw tantrum at Premier Christy Clark’s claims she will make the province debt-free. He said that “they’re going to be debt-free, I saw it on the bus … big print, big font. If it’s a big font they must be serious about it.” Horgan added that “the debt in British Columbia has gone up faster under the BC Liberal watch than any time in our history.”

In response to the Horgan’s speech, the BC Liberal Party criticized NDP’s record throughout the 1990s. A letter addressed by Energy and Mines Minister, Bill Bennett,  to all party members said that “this is the second leadership process in a row where the only candidates interested in being leader are connected directly to the ‘Decade of Decline.’” Bennett added that “Mr. Horgan, just like outgoing leader Adrian Dix, has been at the centre of the same ill-conceived economic policies for more than 20 years.”
