The embattled mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has been out of the public spotlight for quite some time now, i.e. since the mayor took a formal leave of absence from his job and his re-election campaign on last Thursday. Even though it is clear that Ford flew to the U.S. last week, it now appears that he never entered the country.

According to a statement issued by the Consul General of Canada in Chicago, Roy Norton, on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Ford flew to Chicago but didn’t stay. It was explained that “U.S. (Customs and Border Protection) confirmed to us that Mayor Ford arrived in Chicago last Thursday and that after discussion with US CBP he withdrew his request to enter the USA and departed.” Norton alleged that the consulate wasn’t involved until after the fact. He stated that “we contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection to see what they could tell us (we made clear to US CBP our awareness of the Privacy considerations by which they – and their Canadian counterparts – operate).”

Mayor Ford’s brother and councilor, Doug Ford, declined to comment on the mayor’s whereabouts on Tuesday as he said “it’s no one’s business but his own.” Whereas, Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti stated that the mayor’s “history shows he would owe this city an explanation” and so “the mayor should explain where he’s going to be and how long he anticipates being there.” He alleged that “I think everybody will leave him alone if he does that.”
