In this Victorian comedy, Oxford undergrads Jack and Charley are keen to meet their sweethearts for lunch, even if it’s under the watchful eye of Charley’s Aunt Donna. But when her trip’s delayed — with the girls en route to the big date — the impropriety of lunching with two young ladies unchaperoned (this is Victorian England, after all) threatens to scuttle the whole engagement. Solution? The boys dress up one of their friends, Lord Babberley, as Charley’s aunt and proceed on schedule. Comic confusion ensues, especially when the real Aunt Donna shows up and dons a disguise of her own. Cross-dressing, lost loves, Oxford pranks — Charley’s Aunt offers all the ingredients of a classic English farce.
