Narendra Modi, the new prime minister of India, who captured the hearts of Indians during the elections and won a landslide mandate in thirty years of Indian history has made another historic move and has invited all heads of government from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson, Nirmala Sitharaman, said that they have all been given invitations to be present at the Mr. Modi’s swearing-in.

Pakistan being part of the SAARC, has also lead to Modi inviting the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif to the inauguration. The formal invitation to Sharif has been extended by the Indian High Commission in Pakistan. Earlier, after Modi’s party received the magnanimous mandate, Sharif had called the new prime minister and congratulated him on his victory. India and Pakistan have been rivals since the partition in 1947 which lead to a new state for Muslims called Pakistan. This invitation is taken as a responsible gesture by the new Indian prime minister but it is still not decided whether Nawaz Sharif will accept the invitation or not.

“It’s an important gesture … as the largest country in the region, India should be reaching out to its neighbors. This is a very accident-prone relationship, but very intimate too on another level. We are cousins in a very real sense,” said Raja C Mohan, one of India’s most respected foreign affairs analysts.
