This Thursday in Islamabad, one of the chief leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, Shireen Mazari stated that the Geo group was bent on promoting the ‘journalism of blackmailing’ in Pakistan as it tried to intimidate the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief by showing his picture on its channels continuously for eight hours.
Shireen Mazari was addressing a press conference today while she alleged that Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman is still blackmailing politicians. She further added that Geo News did not provide her political party full media coverage during the elections and clearly supported PML-N. They announced the victory of PML-N even before the official results were announced. She said “Mir Shakeelur Rehman is still blackmailing. The group had concrete nexus with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s government.” She said that she wants to make the clear the misconception that her party wants to ban the channel, her party just demands punishment for those who were involved or who were responsible for blackmailing and using funds by foreign agencies.
She said that the same Jang/Geo group was against the Nawaz Sharif in 1999 when his government accused the group of tax theft. “They launched a whole campaign against Nawaz Sharif and his cabinet members in newspapers for curbing their freedom. At that time Nawaz Sharif termed the matter rooted in tax payments. Same is happening today with one difference that PML-N is standing with Geo.”
