On the opening day of first test match, Kane Williamson scored his sixth Test century on Sunday to lead New Zealand to a satisfying 240-2 against the West Indies at stumps at Sabina Park.

The Kiwi No. 3 cracked an unbeaten 105 with a great support from opener Tom Latham, who hit 83 in an assured second wicket stand of 165. Veteran Ross Taylor had also proved to be a nice partner for the 23-year-old Williamson, putting on an unbroken 66 partnership till close of Day 1 as the West Indies toiled on an unresponsive pitch. Taylor remained not out at 34.

Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, the visitors began slow when the right-handed opener Peter Fulton (1) fell prey to fast bowler Jerome Taylor at mere 9-1. Then the Kiwis handled the situation well as Latham and Williamson took the charge to defend against the home team’s attack for almost four hours.

Latham – who is playing his second test match, remained lucky as he survived a couple of situations. He was first given out by Umpire Richard Illingworth at 28 to a short leg catch off left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, but third umpire Ian Gould overturned the decision after the left-hander reviewed it immediately. During the second time, Latham thought himself to be out in the first over after lunch when, on 39, as he edged to gully off Taylor. But TV replays confirmed the Jamaican had over-stepped by a fine margin and the wicket was nullified by a no-ball call.

Finally, Latham got out in the final session as Shane Shillingford earned a return catch off the leading edge.

Afterwards, Williamson moved smoothly towards three figures to bring up a memorable century just before the close of the day.
