Culminating an almost five-month long investigation, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team and the Canadian Border Services Agency made one of the largest heroine seizure in history of the province on June 4. Five suspects were arrested and 292 kilograms of marijuana, 14.1 kilograms of heroin and six kilograms of hashish were seized from a storage facility in west Edmonton and a semi-tractor trailer at the Edmonton International Airport. According to the police, the approximate street value of the drugs is almost $8.7 million.
It was explained that ninety-five kilograms of marijuana and six kilograms of hashish were discovered at the storage facility, where three men were arrested. Whereas, the remaining 197 kilograms of marijuana and 14 bricks of heroin were seized in 17 separate packages were located in the back of a semi-tractor trailer, making it the largest heroin seizure in Alberta’s history. ALERT Insp. Darcy Strang suspects the drugs to be from overseas, but could not speculate on the origin of the shipment. Strang explained that the shipment is believed to have started its route in Vancouver and was destined for Toronto. He said that “it made a stop in Calgary before arriving in Edmonton and the transport truck was also scheduled to stop in Regina and Winnipeg.”
Two of the arrested suspects were the driver and passenger of the tractor trailer, who were arrested at the airport, while the remaining three Edmonton men, 24-year-old Dustin Stone, 51-year-old Douglas Dach and 24-year-old Samuel Hutsulak were arrested later.
