Security measures at British airports are being stepped up after the United States called for an increase in precautions following reports of two terror networks working on a new generation of bombs that could likely to evade existing scans.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson had stated on Wednesday night that a number of overseas airports in Europe and the Middle East with direct flights to the U.S. have been asked to implement enhanced security checks in coming days.

U.S. officials have told that the tightening of security was not due to a specific threat but was a response to potentially new bomb designs that the current scanners might fail to detect. An official has also indicated that currently the main focus of U.S. was on direct flights from Europe and the Middle East to U.S.

Amid the stepped up security at U.K. airports, the Prime Minister David Cameron has told: “We take these decisions looking at the evidence in front of us and working with our partners.

“This is something we’ve discussed with the Americans and what we have done is put in place some extra precautions and extra checks.

“The safety of the travelling public must come first. We mustn’t take any risks with that.

“I hope this won’t lead to unnecessary delays but it’s very important that we always put safety first, and we do.”

The U.K. Department for Transport has stated: “We have taken the decision to step up some of our aviation security measures.” While refusing to comment on the proposed changes in measures, the department has confirmed that the modified security checking procedure would not make the passengers to suffer through delays and lengthy queues.
