Police has confirmed that it is investigating two drug-related deaths during Toronto’s Veld Music Festival this week as homicides, contemplating on charges to be laid over the tragic incident. According to a press briefing on Monday, police explained that in addition to the deaths of a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, 13 other people were injured over the weekend, having ingested what police to believe was a “party drug.”
However, authorities are still unclear about the nature of the drug sold at the festival, as they speculate it could be either MDMA, ecstasy or even a form of GHB. Consequently, police has sought help from the public to determine what the substance was. During an interview on Toronto’s The Morning Show, Det. Sgt. Peter Trimble revealed that “this is under the realm of illegal drugs. There are people who probably don’t want to come forward or see us.” Det. Trimble stressed that “I’m not concerned about the purchaser of the drugs. I’d like any witness to come forward and talk about who they bought the drugs from on that day or night.”
Additionally, Trimble pointed out that both victims who died over the weekend had ingested the drug and quickly fell ill. Police also believes that the 22-year-old man was spotted being carried by two men before an ambulance was called. The victim was allegedly apparently hostile with paramedics and had to be handcuffed before transportation. Although the cuffs were removed later, the victim failed to make it to hospital alive.
