During an emotional press conference by Premier Dave Hancock, he has announced his decision to step down from the position of premier and MLA. In his remarks, Mr. Hancock alleged that “you should leave the stage while the crowd is still clapping,” adding that he hopes a byelection will be held to fill his Edmonton-Whitemud seat at almost the same time with other byelections are held.
In addition to that, Mr. Hancock stated that he’s still very proud of the team of people he built who “come to work on behalf of Albertans every day.” Summing up his press conference, he joked while saying that he’d be happy “to take any questions you have, and, as usual, I’ll answer very few of them.” Later on, he confessed about not knowing what’s next for the long-time politician. He alleged that “I’ll spend a little time figuring out what I want to do when I grow up.”
In response to queries about his possible role in a Prentice cabinet, he replied that “I wasn’t asked” about being in cabinet. Moreover, he stressed that that he did discuss the transition to a Prentice government and what they need to move forward, adding that “you can’t refresh and renew” if some of the old faces don’t move on. Meanwhile, Calgary West MLA Ken Hughes also mentioned on Thursday that he will not run in the next provincial election because the party needs “renewal,” while the Calgary-Elbow seat of ousted former premier Alison Redford’s is currently open as well.
