Residents Shocked as Explosion Flattens Three Ottawa Buildings

Report of at least three buildings downed to the ground prompted firefighters to convene at a south Ottawa farm on Thursday night. The firefighters were alerted that the three buildings in Greely-area, including a home, have been “flattened” by a thunderous explosion at around 8:30 p.m. Consequently, the fire department issued a two-alarm fire call and sent a hazardous material team to 1934 Stagecoach Road, east of Manotick, where almost 50 fire firefighters were already present.

A nearby resident, Jeremy Mehme, alleged that “the whole house shook” and when “I looked outside and there was a big ball of fire rising into the sky.” Another resident who lived almost two kilometres from the scene, Patrick Smith, alleged that “it kind of threw the whole family through a loop,” since the explosion was “one loud crash” that shook his house. Meanwhile another resident living almost 20 kilometers away from the scene, Glenn Powers, said that “it sounded like a cannon going off,” adding that “I thought maybe it was a propane tank.”

An Ottawa school trustee present at a meeting at Castor Valley Elementary School, i.e. 10 kilometres from the scene, Mark Fisher, posted on his Facebook page that “the library shook like crazy.” Fisher explained that “I understand now that it was caused by an explosion in Greely. I hope everybody is safe.” A resident mentioned on Twitter that “still hearing more and more sirens” as “huge explosion shock wave felt in the Metcalfe, Greely and Country Hill Estates area.”
