Toronto man Alexandr Chertin faces several charges in connection to a fraud investigation

On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, investigators from Financial Crimes executed three search warrants in the following areas:

– Berry Road and Stephen Drive
– Finch Avenue West and Dufferin Street
– Finch Avenue West and Norfinch Drive

It is alleged that:

– a man, 73, sold counterfeit insurance cards, known as “pink slips”

– he collected monthly instalment cash payments from victims

– he is not a licensed insurance broker, nor affiliated with any company

– a significant number of victims continue to operate their motor vehicles under the belief that they are insured, when they are not

– several accident claims have been filed by victims who believe they are insured

– numerous insurance companies have paid out over $1,000,000 to cover the claims of victims who believe they were insured

Alexandr Chertin, 73, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) two counts of Defrauding the Public Over $5,000
2) two counts of Fraud Over $5,000
3) two counts of Uttering a Forged Document

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, 10 a.m., room 111.

Police believe there may be many more victims.
