Richmond Hill man charged with first degree murder following a suspicious house fire in Richmond Hill

Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit have charged a 42-year-old man with First Degree Murder following a suspicious house fire in the Town of Richmond Hill.

On Monday, October 6, 2014, shortly after 2:30 a.m., police attended a residence on George Street for a fire. Smoke could be seen coming from the house and officers entered the home after hearing calls for help coming from within. Officers located a 42-year-old man and 75-year-old woman in the residence both suffering serious injuries. Both were transported to hospital.

Later that day, police were made aware that another woman, who was identified as the man’s wife, had attended a hospital suffering from injuries as a result of a fire. Further investigation revealed that she and their five children had left the residence on George Street shortly after the fire began and prior to police arrival.

On Thursday, November 6, 2014, the 75-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Following a thorough investigation by York Regional Police and the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management charges have been laid.

Charges:

– First Degree Murder

– Attempted Murder x6

– Arson Disregard For Human Life

– Uttering Threats

– Breach of Probation x2

The accused’s name will not be released to protect the identity of the victims. The accused will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on November 13, 2014.
