Incheon Asian Games silver medallist Pakistan men’s hockey team will take on Belgium in the 35th Champions Trophy tournament opener at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
Pakistan team are in high spirit and ready to take the challenge after having won with 3-0 against Argentina in a practice match besides beating them 4-3 in penalty shootout. They presently owned the 11th ranking in FIH charts. Pakistan have won the title three times while settled with Pakistan silver medal on six occasions and bronze seven times. Pakistan captured their last Champions Trophy medal, a bronze, in the last edition held at Melbourne in 2012.
On the other hands, the Red Lions presently standing at the 4th position in the FIH ranking, it took the fifth place over Germany in the last season played in Melbourne. With the fifth place finish in the London Olympics, the 2012 Champions Trophy and this year’s World Cup, they have done well to confirm their growing conviction to become one of the leading hockey teams.
Previously, the two teams faced each other in the Champions Trophy 2012 where Pakistan blanked Belgium with a score of 2-0. As both the teams are coming out to be strong contenders not leaving any chance to utilise their practice sessions, they are expecting to finish the tournament on a winning note to go a step further.
