The kinetic art of director and choreographer Laurel Jenkins Tenitndo can be hard to describe — especially for audiences left speechless by her adventurous choreography and (in the words of LA Weekly) “mesmerizing ability to transcend the limits of the human body.” The transcendence of limits — and the blurring of boundaries — are two themes which resonate strongly in her new performance, Dance Theater Works. In the first piece, IMAGE ACTION TEXT, elaborate headdresses and evocative shadows extend the physical “edges” of the performers while Miguel Frasconi’s live glass and electronic music heightens the sense of provocative disorientation. The second piece is a world premiere of a solo inspired by the archetypal imagery outlined in Joseph Campbell’s theory of the “hero’s journey.” Be challenged and exhilarated by both parts of Dance Theater Works at Highways Performance Space and Gallery.
