As part of its Cuban Cultural Night, L.A.’s MACHA Theatre hosts a 20th anniversary screening of filmmaker Chris Hume’s documentary This Is Cuba. The event’s timing couldn’t be more poignant; the U.S. and Cuba are now establishing diplomatic ties for the first time in more than 50 years. The film depicts the landscape of Cuba right after it emerged from Soviet control. Hume traveled there, at a time when few American’s had ever visited the island nation, to capture the country’s cultural landscape. This Is Cuba is the haunting and beautiful story of a culture at a pivotal moment in its history. Following the screening, Hume will take part in a Q&A session hosted by MACHA owner Odalys Nanin. The event includes live Cuban music and free appetizers provided by beloved Cuban eatery Porto’s Bakery & Cafe.
