Hamilton Police have confirmed to have charged a 66-year-old Hamilton man, Donald Lemmond, for unlawfully wearing a military uniform after citing his appearances at local citizenship swearing-in ceremonies. According to Lemmond, police took his veterans’ club uniform and some military service papers on Friday and “they came and arrested me today, took me in and let me go on a promise to appear.”

According to a press statement issued by Police on late Friday, they revealed to have started investigating the suspect in December after he was spotted at Citizenship and Immigration Canada ceremonies in military uniform “with various medals of questionable service.” Consequently, the investigation culminated in the execution of a search warrant and it led to seizure of a number of military uniforms and medals of service from the Vietnam War and Afghanistan conflict. Police stated that a man is facing four counts of unlawful use of military uniforms and two counts of personating a peace officer.

According to a report by The Spectator in November, Lemmond’s medals and his claims of 30 years of military service in the Canadian and U.S. armed forces had come under scrutiny following his keynote speech at Mohawk College’s Remembrance Day ceremony. He also appeared at citizenship ceremonies at the college and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Elementary School. A U.S. army official later confirmed there was no record of Lemmond ever serving.
