Toronto police have reported to have discovered a mysterious tunnel near a Pan Am Games venue which is suspected of posing risk to the summer sporting event. Police is seeking the public’s help in order to determine who made the tunnel and why.
During a detailed news conference on Tuesday, deputy police officer provided details about the tunnel first discovered near York University’s Keele Campus and the RexallCentre on Jan. 14. The venue is scheduled to host the tennis events during the Games. Deputy Chief Mark Saunders confirmed that the tunnel has since been filled after it gathered all the evidence required from the tunnel. However, police hopes to get more information from the public, specifically from those living close to the wooded area where the hole was found. Police showed off several photos of the structure, described as 1.93 metres high, 86.4 centimetres wide and 10.3 metres long, along with a secondary hole that held a generator.
In addition to that, Saunders pointed out that clearly whoever built it had some level of expertise. According to Saunders, “there’s no criminal offence for digging a hole” and so far there’s no evidence suggesting that the person who made it had criminal intentions. The executive officer for Pan Am Games security, Saunders, alleged that there is “robust security” in place for the Games and that the tunnel would have been an “eyesore” that security would have spotted. He does not believe it posed a threat to the Games. “We’ll be on top of it,” Saunders said.
