West Australian firefighters from Perth are on way to join personnel from the eastern states in order to help battle wildfires in Canada. So far the wildfires have prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people in western Canada and burnt through more than 1.9 million hectares of forest.

In a statement issued by WA Environment Minister, Albert Jacob, alleged that it was satisfying to be able to provide help. He mentioned that “this is a serious firefighting season in Canada, literally tens of thousands of people have already had to be evacuated from their homes as a result of these fires.” Jacob explained that “at this time of year, it’s winter, it’s wet, bushfire isn’t a hazard here at this time,” adding that “this is a reflection of increasing globalisation in our firefighting efforts, we’re well used in Western Australia seeing teams from other states, our teams here in Western Australia go and assist in the east, similarly we’re increasing our opportunities to assist in international areas, particularly in USA and Canada.” The WA firefighters are expected remain in British Columbia and Alberta.

DFES deputy commissioner, Steve Fewster, pointed out that the fire behaviour in Canada is different to what services in Australia are used to but he said that “I imagine the circumstances are very different, the terrain is different, the weather is very different but our people are competent, they’ve got a lot of experience so they’ll be up to the task.” Fewster stated that “we’ve called for volunteers from the specialist areas that were asked for by the Canadians, the Canadians have asked for some specific skill sets, so the folks that are going over have given up their month or so, gone away from their families and work to volunteer to assist the Canadians.”
