Winnipeg police has confirmed to have responded to an alleged homicide and a house fire that left two dead over the weekend. According to the police, the emergency crews attended a fire in the 300 block of Alexander Avenue on Sunday at around 2:30 a.m. Since several people were inside the home at the time of fire, they had to be rushed to hospital including four adults in critical condition. Later, two women aged 20 and 21 failed to survive the injuries and passed away.
The photos of the scene show that the blaze started in a rooming house with multiple units. In his remarks, police spokesperson Cst. Eric Hofley refrained from confirming a lot of detail and declared the cause of fire as unknown in a media briefing on Sunday. He declined that police has yet ruled the blaze as suspicious and highlighted that the investigation is in its early stages and the arson unit is inspecting the scene.
Meanwhile, the president of the United Firefighters of Winnipeg Union Local 867, Alex Forrest, mentioned in a Facebook post on Sunday that it was “a tragic weekend ending a horrible week of firefighting in Winnipeg.” He explained that “I know I speak for all firefighters, especially the men and women who fought this fire when I say we are profoundly sad for these deaths, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and inner city community of Winnipeg.” He confirmed that two firefighters were also injured, one of whom suffered smoke inhalation.
