At approximately 2:30pm today, February 1st, 2011, Fernie Alpine Ski Resort received a distress call from a male skier who asked for assistance in rescuing his two friends. They had been skiing outside the resort’s controlled recreational area when an avalanche occurred. The Resort contacted Elk Valley RCMP, who in turn proceeded to activate Search and Rescue.

Within minutes of the original call from the stranded skier, Elk Valley RCMP received another call from the Resort requesting to cancel rescue activation efforts. The 3 male skiers were able to get themselves out of the avalanche area and safely made their way back within the Resort’s recreational boundaries.

All 3 males are doing well and one is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
