If you’re Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, the Golden Globes can be an excellent place to meet your future spouse. If you’re anyone else, the awards ceremony is more likely to set the scene for an awkward encounter with your famous ex. On the bright side, all that free-flowing booze means you’ll probably be too tipsy to really care. And with any luck, you’ll have a swimsuit model or Jonas Brother on your arm.
Though the full list of presenters for Sunday’s Golden Globes has yet to be announced, a quick look at the nominees reveals some tricky situations in the making. A few former couples will be in attendance, dramatically increasing the possibility of an uncomfortable run-in on the red carpet or even a dash to the restroom for a quick cry. At least, that’s how we imagine Leonardo DiCaprio will react when he sees former flame Blake Lively and nominee Ryan Reynolds making goo-goo eyes at one another.
Will these reunions result in a cold shoulder, or a rekindling of a romance that once was? And is there a better form of revenge against an ex than winning a bit shiny trophy while they pick at crudités and make painful small talk with a C-lister?
Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield
Full disclosure: We’re rooting for these former lovebirds — they split in 2015 — to recover that lovin’ feeling. After all, Garfield, nominated for his performance in Hacksaw Ridge, is still gushing about his admiration for ex-girlfriend Stone, a nominee for La La Land. Maybe he should wear his old Spidey costume under his tux to sweeten the deal?

Matt Damon & Winona Ryder
Yes, these two dated — for two whole years! In addition to being a presumptive presenter given his win last year, the now-married Damon also produced the critical darling Manchester by the Sea. Ryder, meanwhile, is a nominee for her work on Stranger Things. As such, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to reminisce about those double-dates with Ben and Gwynnie.

Nicole Kidman & Jimmy Fallon
Rest assured that host Fallon will find an opportunity to embarrass himself in front of Lion nominee Kidman, who has made much of her former crush on the clueless (and since-married) Tonight Show host.

Gael García Bernal & Natalie Portman
Bernal stands to win his second Golden Globe in a row for Mozart in the Jungle, while former flame Portman is a frontrunner for Jackie. She’s also married and pregnant with her second child, so the chances of any random drunk-dialing are nil.

Seth MacFarlane & Emilia Clarke
He stars in Sing; her show, Game of Thrones, is nominated for Best Television, Drama. Fortunately, their 2012 romance ended, by all accounts, amicably.

Ryan Reynolds & Scarlett Johansson
Like MacFarlane, ScarJo also stars in Sing, nominated in the animation category. Her first husband, meanwhile, is a nominee for Deadpool, and will almost certainly be joined at the hip with new wife Blake Lively. Lively has her own ex scare to confront: Leonardo DiCaprio, a winner last year, will likely attend as a presenter.
