No one plays a villain better than Denzel Washington. Mostly because he can be so charming that you don’t realize he’s a bad guy right away – and by the time you do, it’s too late. His dirty cop in Training Day was unforgettable and his role in“Flight” is even more complex. In the movie he starts off as a swaggering heroic pilot and gradually the layers are peeled off to reveal a belligerent defensive addict in denial. An egotistical and malevolent force. We watch in horror as his private life is revealed to be unraveling and he keeps repeating his mistakes. Denzel’s performance is bigger than the albeit entertaining movie, and if anyone deserves an Oscar nomination he does.
