Mommy Acne

Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples including whiteheads, blackheads, cysts and red patches of skin. Acne is a result of the clogging of pores on the skin. It is very common during pregnancy because studies show that one out of every two pregnant women is very likely to develop acne on their skin.

One of the causes of acne during pregnancy is the increased level of hormones. If you have a history of developing acne during menstrual period, there are higher chances that you will develop acne during your pregnancy as well. Managing acne especially during pregnancy can be a tricky task because prescription usually results in birth defects and that is why doctors avoid suggesting any sort of medication to women during their pregnancy. Here are some acne care tips for pregnant women:

• Home Remedies For Acne

The reason why doctors do not recommend any sort of medication during pregnancy is that acne treatment can harm a developing fetus. So it is better to use home remedies other than taking a risk for your baby. Honey has anti-bacterial properties so women who have fair chances of developing acne should apply a honey mask at least twice a week and be gentle with their skin. These days, acne soaps are also available so, it is advised to women to wash their face first thing when they wake up in the morning.

Another effective tip for acneis to apply equal quantities of rose water and lime juice on affected area and leave it for twenty minutes. For acute acne problems, it is better to visit a dermatologist but as far as home remedies are concerned, turmeric powder and neem leaves can also cure it. Pregnant women suffering from acne should make a mixture of these two ingredients and apply it on the pimples. The mixture will be more effective if you will leave it to dry for about half an hourand then rinse with cold water.

• Acne treatments that are not safe for pregnant women

For severe acne, doctors usually recommend medicine Isotretinoin but it can be very harmful if you are pregnant. So, pregnant women should avoid taking isotretinoin and other acne medication like hormone therapy, oral tetracycline’s and topical retinoid. Studies show that the amount absorbed by these antibiotics is low but causes signs of birth defects like discoloration of permanent teeth, inhibit bone growth etc.

• Alcohol Free Acne Treatment

Safest course of action for acne is good skin care. Pregnant women who have acne should limit washing their face to two times per day and use a gentle oil free and alcohol free cleanser and scrub. Furthermore, they should avoid over cleansing their skin as it stimulate the skin pores. After washingtheir face, it is better to rinseit with warm water, let it dry and then apply moisturizer. Women should avoid using a cloth or a towel to dry their face.
