Violence raises tension at the Umlazi T section

Serious tension surfaces at Umlazi T section after the clash between two political parties – Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and National Freedom Party (NFP).

The violence amongst the members of two groups has risen to such an extent that a 51-year-old man named Nicholas Themba Ngcobo was shot at the time of conflict when either one side of the party opened fire on Saturday. Members of various parties gathered and benefitted from the situation and started looting houses and spaza shops in the region.

The riots started on Friday declaring two wounded and dead whereas another assault victim was also reported. The cause of death of one of the individuals reported is heart attack which she got after seeing a neighbor’s house burned down by a mob. Incidents of random looting were also reported in the neighborhood. Some even went on to rob people of cash and groceries.

According to the initial investigations that were conducted, it is inferred that some 600 plus people are said to be involved in violent demonstrations in the T-section of Unit 17 over the weekend.

The match taking place at the King Zwelithini Stadium was cancelled when the chaos got out of control. Police authorities had to use tear gas to disperse the crowd and take charge of the situation.

Some of the players inhaled tear gas due to which they had to be taken to the hospital.
