The Governors of Gok State and Western Lakes State have agreed to hold a peace and reconciliation conference in Rumbek between the Gok and Agaar communities in a bid to restore peace and stability in the neighbouring States.

RUMBEK, 15 September 2016 [Gurtong]-The Governor of Western Lakes State, Abraham Makoi Bol Kodi said that the three Governors of Former Lakes State held a joint meeting last month to discuss pertaining disarmament of civilians.

“The State assembly last month passed the bill of disarmament and this bill was categorized into 3 faces. First is voluntary disarmament for those willing to surrender their firearms voluntarily, second will be a joint disarmament by chiefs, Gelwong leaders and Goal leaders and lastly will be the military disarmament that will be targeting the armed Youth resisting to give up arms to the authority concerned.”

Meanwhile the Governor of Gok State, Madhang Majok Meen said the conference will help counter issues of insecurity being experienced in the States.

“We shall share that disarmament bill because it is the same with what will be discussed here by Gok State assembly and we will begin arms mobilization in the hands of civilians.”

The peace conference is expected to prevent conflict and reconcile communities.
