Home Minister P Chidambaram and the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee face tension over the set up of counter terrorism body.

Ms. Banerjee skips the NSG hub inauguration function taking place in her state which was attended by Mr. Chidambaram. According to various sources, name of the chief minister of the state was in the list of guests but was removed later on due to some alterations in the plan. She was replaced by the minister of shipping and congress leader of the state, Mukul Roy.

Analysts are viewing the decision to not show up at the inauguration by Ms. Banerjee as initiating cold war and tension between two supreme allies. At the same time, Ms. Banerjee has issued an official written request to the PM suggesting “review and withdrawal” of the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC).

Four other chief ministers of different states have registered their protest against the setting up of NCTC on grounds that they were not consulted before anything was finalized on the matter and that violates the principles of federalism as the matter is beyond the concerns of the federal government. Other state leaders who have registered their concerns over the issue are: Jayalalithaa of Tamil Nandu, Narendra Modi of Gujrat, Nitish Kumar of Bihar, and Navin Patnaik of Odisha.
