Alan BarnesAn amount of more than £100,000 has been raised in funding to aid relocate a frail and visually impaired disabled pensioner, who became a victim of mugging outside his home in Low Fell, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear on Sunday.

Mr Barnes, 67-year-old and 4ft 6in tall man, who has been disabled since the time of his birth after his mother contracted German measles while being pregnant, broke his collarbone when he was pushed to hit the ground.

On the day of incident, when Mr Barnes was taking out his bins, the brutal attacker pushed him to ground demanding money and checking through his victim’s pockets but ran off after the victim screamed for help.

The 21-year-old beautician Katie Cutler set up the Help Alan Barnes online donation page on the Go Fund Me site after reading the reports of evil attack which police called to be “disgraceful”.

Donations came flooding on the page and blitzed past its modest fundraising target of £500 after thousands of well-wishers were told that Mr Barnes is too afraid to return home after the tragedy.

More than 7,000 well-wishers have raised the cash in just a couple of days after hearing about the cowardly attack on the disabled pensioner.

Ms Cutler has told: “I was so upset that anyone could target a disabled pensioner and be so cruel.

“We can’t take away what has happened but with a little donation we can make the future a prettier one and help towards the cost of his new home. Thank you all.”

Donations have been accepted from around the world including America, Canada and New Zealand.

After seeing the surprisingly high donation figures, the humble victim has said that he will remember people’s generosity more than the attempted mugging itself.

Mr Barnes also indicated of lacking words to thank Katie and he had been “blown away” by her kindness.

Mr Barnes is Low Fell’s one of the renowned persons and is popular for his ability to quickly calculate how many days old someone is from their date of birth.
