Background

An 18-month-old child remains in critical condition at a Toronto hospital following a near-drowning on his residential property yesterday.

On Sunday July 11, 2010 at approximately 9:50 a.m. an 18-month-old child was discovered by his mother lying face down in a pond on their residential property in north Ajax. She was assisted by her husband who commenced CPR while she dialed 911. Police, paramedics and fire responded and emergency first aid was continued. The child’s heartbeat was re-established and he began to breathe during transport to a local hospital. After an initial assessment, he was then transported to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He currently is being cared for at this facility and is in critical condition.

Durham Regional Police continue to support the family during this horrible tragedy and encourage all families to exercise extreme care when dealing with water safety during the summer months.
