Dreamwalker Dance Company in association with Volcano Theatre presents 6th edition of The Whole Shebang – One : Two : One            November 23-25, 2012

Led by Dreamwalker Dance Company Artistic Director Andrea Nann, the 6th edition of The Whole Shebang, entitled One : Two : One, questions the notion of identity by exploring twinning, mirroring and unison in an exciting and deeply immersive program that runs November 23-25 at Dancemakers Centre for Creation in the Historic Distillery District.

Using movement, sound, spoken text, video, puppet theatre, mirrors and photography, a tremendous line-up of critically acclaimed artists will draw audiences into a creative exploration of how one becomes two, and two becomes one.

The Whole Shebang is a one-of-a-kind cultural event – a multi-arts program of contemporary visual and performing arts.

"The allure of The Whole Shebang is how collectively, these thoughtful artists detail life in the 21st century in all its myriad paradoxes." –Paula Citron, The Globe and Mail

The Whole Shebang – One : Two : One  highlights include:

o       Until We Say Yes, choreographed by Kate Alton and powerfully danced by performers Johanna Bergfelt and Pulga Muchochoma, Until We Say Yes was inspired by events in the choreographer's life. The duet lays bare the raw pain of an undeniable bond that is nonetheless broken when it is stretched across a great distance.

o   Dring, Dring, created by Serbian, Montreal-based composer Ana Sokolovi_ and performed by vocalists Neema Bickersteth and Xin Wang.

o     Friendship Photos, created by German photographer Katharin Ollroge prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, these intimate portraits expose an emotional/psychological twinning that close friends feel.

o  One : two : one composed by Markus Stahl is a 2-and-a-half minute exploration of the dichotomy between the individual and the multiple. Bearing the same name as the show as a whole, it is scored for 6 violins and 2 cellos. The instruments come together presenting themes of isolation, duplication, and oneness.

o Monger Memories (premiere) takes siblings Ann Powell and David Powell (co-directors of Puppetmongers Theatre) back to some of their earliest memories, during their dad's British army posting to Hong Kong in the mid-1950s. Using their old family photos as triggers to their fragments of memory, they explore a shared past through shadow puppetry and the few items they still carry with them from this big shared adventure. The duo has continued their adventure together over 30-plus years of professional life together.

o Twin-hood (premiere), investigating lifetimes of competition, acceptance, understanding, hatred and love, created and performed by twins Ben Kamino (performer) and Alex Kamino (photographer).

o        IN / TACT (premiere) What does it mean to be whole? If we are born as one but live as two, how can we ever be complete? IN / TACT tackles the complex questions of identity faced by those genetically linked forever; identical twins. Using a blend of dance, text, music and media, the piece focuses on twins' unique struggle for independence, significance and self-worth, both individuals desperate to prove they are not a "half" nor a "copy." Created and performed by Susannah & Katie MacKay.

o       Lament for Solo Computer (premiere) A twinning of sound and body with a score by experimental composer Jascha Narveson and dance by Lucy Rupert. A jaunt through a hallway by a soulless dame, an alter ego who wants to annihilate the world, or at least let you know that she could. Two voices, sound and body, singing the same utter loneliness.

o Double Life, a relentless, intricately tangled exploration of double identity and the battle between the image of ourselves that we project to the world around us and the one that we carry inside. Originally produced by firstthingsfirst productions in association with DanceWorks CoWorks, Double Life is choreographed by Kate Alton and performed by Kate Holden and Kate Franklin.
