Opposition leader Tony Abbott will declare his stand on the budget on Thursday. Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Australians should know what the opposition leader has planned for government when he delivers his budget reply speech.

“At the forthcoming election, the leader of the opposition will ask the Australian people to endorse his plans … people are entitled to know what those plans are. These plans, I believe, are to cut to the bone,” PM Gillard said.

Senator Wong urged Mr Abbott to stop deceiving Australians with his rhetoric statements, gimmicks and all the slogans that are designed to distract attention from what his real plans are.

“If the coalition does accept the government’s budget, we would welcome their recognition that this is an economically sensible budget. But let’s remember, they would have to do more … he’s still got a range of commitment on both the spending and saving side that he would have to meet,” Finance Minister Penny Wong said.

On the other hand, Treasurer Wayne Swan is confident that his budget strikes an exemplary balance and had been put together in some of the most unprecedented circumstances in Australia’s post-Federation history.

“I do think there’s a sweet spot between the austerity freaks who say cut way harder, and the green types who would happily see the bottom fall out of the budget,” said Mr Swan.
