Brother of a Canadian-Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy imprisoned in Egypt, Sherif Fahmy, has recently published an online petition urging the Canadian government to do more to free Mohamed. According to the petition filed at Avaaz.org, Sherif mentions that “our mother is heartbroken. She doesn’t know if she will live to see her son again.”

The description in the petition’s detail is urging its signatories to address a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and demand that they “take urgent public action” to fight for Mohamed Fahmy’s release. It says that “Canada can never allow domestic or international political concerns to get in the way of our duty to protect our citizens from injustice. Your weak response up until this point has been unacceptable.” Baird has received bitter criticism for not calling for Fahmy’s release openly, as Baird has previously mentioned that officials are speaking privately with Egyptian authorities to ensure a “successful resolution” to the case.

A producer with Al Jazeera English in Cairo, Mohamed Fahmy, is sentenced to seven years for allegedly aiding a terrorist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition to Mohamed Fahmy, Australian correspondent Peter Greste and Egyptian producer Baher Mohamed have also received sentences for seven years. In addition to that Mohamed’s seven years, the judge gave him an additional three years for having an empty shell casing. However, all the three victims have utterly denied the charges and the sentences have caused outrage around the world.
