Mark Taper Forum (Los Angeles, CA)
Mambo, salsa, cha-cha-cha — the many music styles of Cuba are usually associated with the dance hall and not the concert hall. But this is a huge injustice as Cuban classical composers have been as lively, inventive and daring as those writing dance tunes and party music. Inspired by Spanish and Afro-Cuban traditions, Cuba’s classical music is an exhilarating melange of influences and experimentation, deeply respectful of several traditions but totally unique in its own right. Now pianist Daniel Amat, who hails from a tiny town on the island’s southern shore, pays tribute to some of his country’s most prolific and versatile composers. Come hear Amat — accompanied by a few of Los Angeles’ most sought after studio musicians — play music from Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), Ernesto Lecuona (1895-1963) and Israel Lopez “Cachao” (1918-2008).
