In case Thomas Muclair strives to become the new leader of NDP, he is certain that he’ll need a lot more than the usual support from his main fans in Quebec.
Muclair says, “Quebec is the only province that does not have a provincial wing of the NDP. Of the 85,000 to 90,000 current, existing cards of the NDP, fewer than 1,600 are from Quebec… that’s a simple mathematical model that I have to deal with. When I say I haven’t reached any decision yet, I’m not playing coy. It is a simple statement of fact.”
Muclair is the keystone of Quebec’s NDP revolution – the sole voted MP there until this previous election sent 59 councilors from the province to Ottawa. Nevertheless, although the NDP commands Quebec, proper backing for the party there is still modest.
According to Mulcair, he has backing in other parts of Canada, too, but he and his supporters will have to sell many more memberships in Quebec if he chooses to run. For example, British Columbia has around 30,000 memberships in contrast to Quebec’s 1,600.
NDP leader Brian Topp and MP Romeo Saganash have specified they will run for directorship but neither have formally submitted their documents to register in the campaign that officially started Thursday. The New Democrats are looking for a new head after longtime leader Jack Layton died last month.
