A day after the Congress threatened to go alone in the municipal elections in the state, NCP chief Sharad Pawar issued an ultimatum of 15 days to his ally to decide on the issue. Pawar has clarified that it would not be possible for them to wait for a dialogue after 15 days.
Pawar chaired a series of meetings with party functionaries, ministers, city leaders throughout the day and deliberated on the alliance with Congress for the BMC elections. Most of the leaders were for an alliance with the Congress as the party has a weak mandate in the city. However, some others said that to strengthen the party and to provide opportunities to its workers, the polls should be fought independently.
Pawar said that his party was in favors of cordial talks and alliance but they would not fall prey to pressure tactics.
“We had to suffer a huge loss due to the fallen talks in the last minutes in the 2007 BMC elections because the party had to struggle for candidates on the seats that were never concentrated upon. Taking a lesson from it, we should finish off the talks with the Congress in the next 15 days, or else be ready otherwise,” he said.
