On Thursday, December 1, 2011, the Toronto Police Service, in conjunction with the Victoria Police Department, concluded a parental abduction investigation that led to the arrest of a woman.
It is alleged that:
– in May 1993, the accused left Toronto taking her 20-month-old daughter, violating a custody order.
On May 29, 1993, police were contacted by the girl’s father and police started an investigation.
Over the next 18 years, the police, advocacy groups for missing children and the girl’s father followed up on tips.
On June 10, 1993, an arrest warrant was issued for Patricia O’Byrne, now 54, for:
1) Abduction in Contravention of a Custody Order
In September 2011, a tip was received through the Missing Children Society of Canada that the accused may be living on Vancouver Island.
On Thursday, December 1, 2011, with the assistance of the Victoria Police Department the accused was arrested in Victoria, BC.
The Canadian Centre for Child Protection/MissingKids.ca met with the abducted person and continues to provide support to her.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Monday December 5, 2011, room 501, at 10 a.m
