The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has raised the bar of the age limit set for taxi drivers to be legally allowed to drive. The announcement was made on Friday which hiked the limit to 75 years of age.
As per the announcement, the extended age limit relaxation will apply to all taxi drivers in Singapore from 1st of June 2012. The age limit to which a taxi driver was allowed to drive a taxi prior to this amendment was 73. The new adjustment has added another two years to the life of a taxi driver who is fit, healthy, and wishing to continue to earn via driving his/her taxi.
Once a taxi driver reaches the age of 70, he/she is required to go through an assessment test to get their vocational license extended for the next couple of years. The assessment test consists of a medical examination to ensure that the applicant is medically fit to drive, an occupational therapy evaluation, and lastly the applicant has to give out a driving test on the road in the presence of an experienced driver and the occupational therapist so that the abilities of the taxi driver to continue to perform his/her duty without putting anyone else’s life at risk are assessed thoroughly.
