The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip has made his his first major public appearance since leaving hospital as he joined thousands of well-wishers to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday at the Trooping the Colour parade.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who celebrated his 91st birthday last Sunday, was taken ill during Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations a fortnight ago and spent five nights at King Edward VII Hospital in central London, where he received treatment for a bladder infection. He was allowed the return to the royal family in time for his 91st birthday last Sunday, but his appearance at today’s celebration will be taken as a sign that he is truly on the mend. He and the Queen arrived in a glass coach for the televised military spectacle which is held every year at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, central London.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman has told that the couple had planned to travel in Queen Victoria’s 1842 Vintage carriage but changed due to the “unpredictable nature of the weather”.
The coach, built in 1881, was first used by the Queen and Duke on their wedding day when they travelled from Westminster Abbey to the palace on November 20, 1947.
A huge crowd, including friends and family of those taking part, packed into seats and stands around to watch precision marching by hundreds of Guardsmen.
The Queen took the royal salute. She was wearing a primrose yellow coat and dress by Angela Kelly with matching hat, and displayed her Brigade of Guards brooch. While the Duke has put on a full ceremonial dress as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.
Prince William, Prince Charles, Prince Harry and Kate Middleton were also present at the ceremony. They were joined by Prime Minister, David Cameron at the event.
The Queen celebrated her actual birthday on April 21, when she turned 86, but monarch’s official birthday is marked through today’s ceremony, which always comes in June. More than 1,600 officers and soldiers had joined to give duty at the celebration.
