This year’s The Angel City Jazz Festival, presented for the first time with the Jazz Bakery, highlights the living tradition of jazz, how it’s been passed from generation to generation and has grown in the process. The evening’s legendary performers include drummer Peter Erskine (joined by nephew Damian Erskine), whose seminal work with Weather Report changed jazz forever, Bobby Bradford, whose revelatory playing with the legendary Ornette Coleman Quintet in the 1970s is still talked about today, and influential saxophonist Archie Shepp, whose inventiveness was equally matched by his political consciousness. Among the new generation of influential artists are pianist Vardan Ovsepian, rising star trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and renowned bassist Mark Dresser.
