Finally after years of mutual negotiations Canada and India has eventually agreed on a decisive deal opening the export of Canadian uranium and nuclear technology to the Southeast Asian giant nation.
It is roughly two years past the original nuclear cooperation agreement was signed, it took two whole years for the two nations to tackle the diplomatic deadlocks which hindered its implementation. The major issue withholding the implementation of the agreement was the use of uranium obtained by India, so Canada asked for detailed supervision to make sure it was only used for peaceful purpose.
Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, and Prime Minister of Indian, Manmohan Singh, gave a joint statement on Tuesday confirming that they have long-drawn-out the negotiations and have concluded on an administrative agreement leading to the implementation of nuclear pact. Harper mentioned in a statement that “the conclusion of the administrative arrangement with India will facilitate opportunities for Canadian companies to play a greater role in meeting India’s growing energy needs.” Harper hopes that this cooperation will generate millions of dollars in new business and jobs in Canada.
Canada and India have had their issues in the past, especially on the topic of nuclear energy. Canada gave up the support for India’s nuclear industry after it assumed that Canadian nuclear material was used in India’s first nuclear weapons test in 1974. But now after so many years, Canada have agreed to resume export but demanded a fool proof oversight over the use of nuclear material, a requirement that Indians claimed was patronizing since the country already reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
