Gérald Tremblay began his career at Montreal City Hall on Nov. 4, 2001, hopeful to form a unifying force for all Montrealers, “to make this city a success.”

Almost eleven years have passed to that time, as less than a year is left in his third term, Tremblay has stepped down from his position in great and utter disgrace. Now Tremblay will always be remembered as the politician who quit after being alleged for illegal electoral financing in his Union Montréal party and expensive charges of corruption within the closest ranks of his administration.

The allegations against Tremblay begun in his second mandate, along with accusations of financial misspending surfaced.  It was in 2007 that the city of Montreal spent a huge sum of $355 million in the largest contract of the city’s history. This notorious contract was awarded to a construction company called Génieau, i.e. consortium including the construction firm Simard-Beaudry, owned at the time by entrepreneur Tony Accurso. At that time in 2009, Mayor Gérald Tremblay commented on the $355M water meter contract, that ‘We were not informed of all the facts.’

The allegations and curtain call for Tremblay began on Oct. 30, when Charbonneau inquiry was initiated into the massive corruption of the construction industry in the city. Tremblay quickly denied any allegation against him, and reportedly said “let’s talk about the facts when they are there.” Finally on Monday evening, Nov. 5, Tremblay gave up his act and announced his sudden departure from politics. Tremblay is still denying any knowledge, beyond rumors, of corruption within his administration.
